MULTI VERB

To slim down: น้ำหนักลด, ผอมลง

- To lose weight. ผอมลง

"Susan looks fantastic, she has really slimmed down since I last saw her". ซูซานดูดีมากๆ เธอดูผอมลงมากจากเมื่อคราวที่แล้วที่ฉ้นเจอ

To take over: ดูแลรับผิดชอบต่อ, รับช่วงต่อ, รวบกิจการต่อ

- To take responsibilty for something someone else had been doing, or to take complete control over something.

การรับผิดชอบงานบางอย่าง ที่ผู้อื่นเคยทำมาก่อน หรือเข้ามาดูแล ควบคุม ทุกอย่าง อย่างเต็มตัว

- "I'm leaving the company in January, so David is going to take over as manager".

- ฉันจะลาออกจากที่ทำงานในเดือนมกราคมนี้ ดังนั้นเดวิดจะเข้ามาดูแลแทนฉัน ในตำแหน่งผู้จัดการ

Food for thought: การขบคิด ครุ่นคิด

- This expression is used to talk about something new you have just found out that is worth thinking about.

- สำนวนนี้ ใช้หมายถึงสิ่งใหม่ที่คุณเพิ่งจะรู้ และเป็นสิ่งที่คุณต้องขบคิด

"I was going to choose the job which offered the highest salary, but I just heard that the second job has excellent benefits; something that is certainly food for thought".

- ฉันกำลังเลือกงานที่เขาเสนอให้เงินเดือนสูงสุด แต่ฉันเพิ่งได้ยินมาว่า งานที่สองมีสวัสดิการและสิทธิประโยชน์ที่ดีมากๆ เป็นอะไรที่ฉันต้องใช้สมองขบคิดก่อนตัดสินใจ

To catch a glimpse of someone or something:

- To see something but only for a very short period of time.

"I caught a glimspe of the new Avatar movies trailer, and the speacial effects look great".

ADJECTIVES

Sentimental: ซาบซึ้ง, เห็นใจ

Grateful: สำนึกในบุญคุณ

VERB

Borrow: ยืม

Lend: ให้ยืม

NOUN:

Shape: รูปร่าง, ทรวดทรง

Cloak: เสื้อคลุมที่ไม่มีปก

Words that describe homes :

Cosy: อบอุ่น และสะดวกสบาย

Spacious: กว้างใหญ่, มหาศาล

Cluttered: รกรุงรัง

Luxurious: โอ่อ่า. หรูหรา

Comfortable: สบาย

Traditional: โบราณ, เก่าแก่, ดั้งเดิม

Modern: สมัยใหม่

Cramped: คับแคบ

NATURAL ENGLISH TIP

If someone goes somewhere to enjoy themselves, it is polite to ask them about it when they return. We do this by asking the following question:

ถ้าคุณรู้ว่าเพื่อนหรือคนรู้จักของคุณไปเที่ยวพักผ่อนมา ถือเป็นมารยาทที่คุณจะต้องถามถึงเมื่อเขากลับจากการไปเที่ยวพักผ่อน เราสามารถใช้คำถามต่อไปนี้ได้

Q) Did you have a good time?

You can answer this question by using the structure featured below:

คุณสามารถตอบคำถามนี้ได้ ตามโครงสร้างข้างล่าง

A) Yes I had a + positive adjective + time

(example) Yes I had a wonderful time

                         or

A) No I had a + negative adjective + time

(example) No I had an awful time

If you didn't have a good or bad time, you can say: ถ้าไม่มีอะไรพิเศษ

คุณสามารถพูดว่า

It was ok       or    It was alright

MULTI VERB

To squeeze in: ยัด, แออัด, เบียดเสียด

- To get into a small space in which there is very little room.

- การเข้าไปอยู่อย่างแออัดในช่องว่างหรือที่ที่เล็กๆ

'There were six of us in the car, so four people had to squeeze into the back seat.

ต.ย พวกเราทั้งหกคนอยู่ในรถ ฉะนั้นพวกเราสี่คนก็ต้องนั่งเบียดเสียดกันอยู่ที่นั่งข้างหลัง

To shell out: เสียเงิน หมดเงินไปเยอะ

-To spend a lot of money on something.

- จ่ายเงินอย่างมากมายสำหรับของบางสิ่ง

"I just shelled out on a new car. It cost a fortune but it's really beautiful".

ต.ย. ฉันเพิ่งหมดเงินไปกับการซื้อรถคันใหม่จนหมดตัว แต่ว่ามันก็เป็นรถที่สวยมากจริงๆ

To grin and bare it: ยอมรับ, จำทน, ไม่ปริปาก

- To not complain about a situation, even though you are unhappy about it

- การที่ไม่ปริปากบ่นกับเรื่องนั้นๆ ถึงแม้ว่าคุณจะไม่ชอบใจกับเรื่องน้นๆก็ตาม

"I really don't like long working hours, but I need the money so I'm going to have to grin and bare it".

ต.ย. ฉันไม่ชอบจริงๆเลยที่ ต้องทำงานหลายชั่วโมง แต่ว่าฉันก็ต้องการเงิน เพราะฉะนั้นฉันก็เลยต้องจำทนต้องทำต่อไป

To give someone the cold shoulder: เมินเฉย.ไม่สนใจ

- To ignore someone who wants you to notice them or like them

- การเมินเฉยใส่คนที่เขาต้องการให้คุณสนใจ

"I really fancy a girl I work with, but every time I try talking to her she gives me the cold shoulder".

ต.ย. ฉันล่ะชอบสาวที่ฉันทำงานด้วยจริงๆ เลย แต่ว่าทุกๆครั้งที่ฉันพยายามคุยกับเธอ เธอกลับทำเป็นไม่สนใจ

ADJECTIVES

Robust: แข็งแรง, ตรงไปตรงมา, เอา จริงเอาจัง

Bashful: ขี้อาย, กระดากอาย

VERB

Grin: ยิ้มยิงฟัน, บด

Frown: ทำหน้าบึ้ง.ขมวดคิ้ว

NOUN:

Charity: การทำการกุศล

Trial: การทดลอง

Words that describe texture :

คำที่ใช้สำหรับการอธิบายถึงลักษณะของเนื้อผ้า

Smooth: เรียบ

Rough: หยาบ สาก

Blunt: ทื่อ

Soft: นุ่ม

Fluffy(adj): ที่มีขนปุกปุย

Firm: แข็ง หนักแน่น

Delicate: ละเอียดอ่อน

Bumpy: ขรุขระ

GRAMMAR

There are number of conditional clauses which can be used in everyday English.

ในภาษาอังกฤษมีการใช้ประโยคแสดงเงื่อนไขต่างๆหลายแบบ ซึ่งประโยคเหล่านี้เราสามารถนำมาใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันได้

A conditional clause can be used to talk about a possible future event, or to speculate about past situations.

ประโยคเงื่อนไข สามารถใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นไปได้ว่าจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต หรือเป็นการคาดการณ์จากสถานการณ์ในอดีต

Today we are going to take a closer look at two future conditional clauses.

วันนี้เราจะพูดถึง ประโยคเงื่อนไขในอนาคต 2 แบบ

1.If+subject+V1+subject+will/won't/might+V1

The above clause is used to talk about a future event, or situation which is possible or quite likely to happen.

โครงสร้างข้างบนนี้ใช้เมื่อเราพูดเกี่ยวกับ เหตุการณ์ หรือสถานการณ์ที่สามารถเป็นไปได้หรือมีความเป็นไปได้ที่จะเกิดขึ้น ในอนาคต

e.g. If it rains tonight, I'll get a taxi.

เช่น ถ้าคืนนี้ฝนตก ฉันจะนั่งแท็กซี่

e.g. If you feel tired tonight, we'll stay at home.

เข่น ถ้าคืนนี้คุณรู้สึกเหนื่อย เราก็จะอยู่บ้านกันนะ

2.If+subject+V2+subject+would+V1

The second structure is used when we want to talk about an imagined event, or about something which is unlikely to happen.

โครงสร้างที่สองนี้ เราใช้เมื่อ ต้องการพูดถึงการจินตนาการ หรือ พูดถึงเรื่องที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ที่จะเกิดขึ้น

e.g. If I won 5,000,000 baht I'd buy a car.

เช่น ถ้าฉันถูกรางวัล ได้เงินมา 5,000,000 บาท ฉันจะซื้อรถสักคันหนึ่ง

e.g. If I met Brad Pitt I'd ask him to marry me

เช่น ถ้าฉันได้เจอแบรด พิท ฉันจะขอเขาแต่งงาน

A big hello to all Bitesize readers

สวัสดีครับทุกๆคน ช่วงนี้อากาศเปลี่ยนแปลงบ่อยๆ เดี๋ยวร้อนเดี๋ยวฝนตก ก็ขอให้ทุกคนรักษาสุขภาพกันด้วยนะครับ

และสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา ก็เป็นวันสำคัญทางศาสนาพุทธอีกวันหนึ่งนั่นก็คือวันออกพรรษา (End of Buddhist Lent Day) ก็หวังว่าทุกคนคงจะได้มีโอกาสไปทำบุญ (Make merit) เวียนเทียน ( walk with lighted candles in hand around a temple) กันที่วัดทุกคนนะครับ สำหรับตัวผมก็อยู่ที่ประเทศไทยมาได้ 4 ปีแล้ว และได้มีโอกาสทำบุญเวียนเทียนที่วัดเช่นกันครับ

ช่วงปิดเทอมนี้ ทางInsight English ร่วมกับ Insight Education Consulting และ Se-ed Learning Center จัดกิจกรรม English Camp ให้กับน้องๆอายุระหว่าง 8 - 12 ปี ระหว่างวันที่ 13 - 16 ตุลาคมนี้ ที่เพชรริมธารรีสอร์ท จังหวัดเพชรบุรี และแน่นอนครับ งานนี้ตัวผมครูเจฟก็ได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมครั้งนี้ด้วย แล้วผมจะเก็บภาพประทับใจมาฝากเพื่อนๆในฉบับหน้านะครับ

MULTI VERB

To put up with someone/or something:

อดทน อดกลั้นกับคนบางคน หรือต่อการกระทำบางอย่าง

- This multi-verb is used when we are unhappy with a person or situation but choose to tolerate them.

-กริยาวลีนี้ ใช้เมื่อเราไม่มีพอใจคนบางคนหรือสถานการณ์นั้นๆ แต่ก็ต้องทนอยู่กับสิ่งนั้น

'Sarah is really annoying but I have to put up with her because she's my wife's best friend'.

ต.ย. ซาร่าเป็นคนที่น่ารำคาญมากๆ แต่ฉันก็ต้องทนกับหล่อน เพราะว่าเธอคือเพื่อนรักของภรรยาฉัน

To look up to someone: ยกย่อง เทิดทูน

-To have a lot of respect for someone and see them as a role model.

- มีความเคารพนับถือต่อคนๆนั้นเป็นอย่างมาก และยกย่องให้เขาเป็นบุคคลตัวอย่าง

"I really look up to my teacher he always helps his students and wants them to do well. When I'm older I want to be just like him".

ต.ย. ฉันยกย่องครูของฉันมาก เขาช่วยนักเรียนของเขาเสมอและอยากให้พวกเขาทำในสิ่งดี เมื่อฉันอายุมากขึ้น ฉันก็อยากจะเป็นให้ได้เหมือนเขานี่แหล่ะ

A man/woman of few words: คนพูดน้อย ออมคำพูด

- This expression is used to describe someone who doesn't talk much.

วลีนี้ใช้หมายถึงคนที่พูดไม่ค่อยเก่ง

"David is a man of few words but when he does speak he often has something interesting to say".

ตย: เดวิดเป็นคนพูดน้อยแต่ถ้าเขาได้พูดแล้วล่ะก็ เขาก็มักจะพูดแต่เรื่องที่น่าสนใจเสมอ

To bide your time: รอคอยโอกาส รอจังหวะ

- To be patient about a situation and wait and see what happens

หมายถึงการต้องอดทนต่อสถานการณ์นั้นๆและต้องรอคอยเพื่อดูว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้น หรือจะเป็นอย่างไรต่อไป

"I've had a lot of offers from different Univesities but I'm going to bide my time before choosing one. I have plenty of time before I have to make a decision".

ตย: ฉันได้รับข้อเสนอมากมายจากมหาวิทยาลัยต่างๆ แต่ฉันว่าฉันจะรออีกสักหน่อยก่อนที่จะเลือกสักที่หนึ่ง ฉันยังมีเวลาอีกถมเถก่อนที่จะตัดสินใจ

ADJECTIVES

Unaware: ซึ่งไม่ได้คาดคิดมาก่อน

Intimidating: ทำให้กลัว

VERB

Tolerate: อดทน อดกลั้น

Inquire: สอบถาม

NOUN:

Role model: ผู้ซึ่งมีลักษณะควรค่าเป็นแบบอย่างให้กับผู้อื่น

Enemy: ศัตรู, ข้าศึก

Saying your joking :

ประโยคต่างๆต่อไปนี้ เป็นประโยคที่คุณสามารถใช้พูดเมื่อคุณต้องการบอกว่า "ฉันล้อเล่นนะ / ฉันพูดเล่น / ฉันแค่ล้อเล่นเท่านั้นเอง"

I'm kidding.

I'm pulling your leg.

I'm winding you up.

I'm only messing.

I'm only joking.

I'm not being serious.

I'm having you on.

I'm only teasing.

I'm having a giggle.

SPOT THE MISTAKES:

มาหาข้อที่ผิดกันเถอะ

The following passage contains a number of mistakes regarding the present perfect tense, prepositions, and singular and plural nouns. There are nine errors in total. Try and find as many as you can, and then check your corrections in the next issue of Bite Size.

จาก ข้อความข้างล่างนี้ มีจุดผิดพลาดที่เกี่ยวกับเรื่องของ present perfect, prepositions และ นามเอกพจน์ และนามพหูพจน์ทั้งหมด 9 จุด ลองหากันเลยดีกว่าครับ และเราจะเฉลยในอาทิตย์ถัดไป

I never go to Japan but I really like to. Many people have tell me that it are a very beautiful and modern country. Japanese foods is very tasty and there is a lot choice. My sister go to Japan last year and she told me that it was amazing place to visit.

MULTI VERBS

To rush off: รีบ

To quickly leave a place because you have something else to do, or somewhere else to be.

หมายถึงอาการรีบร้อนออกจากที่ที่หนึ่งเนื่องจากมีสิ่งที่ต้องทำต่อหรือเพราะต้องไปอีกที่ที่หนึ่ง

(e.g. "I'm sorry I can't stay long, I have to rush off and collect my sister from the hospital".

ต.ย. ฉันขอโทษนะที่ไม่สามารถอยู่ได้นานกว่านี้ ฉันต้องรีบไปรับน้องสาวของฉันที่โรงพยาบาล

To clam up: ปิดปากเงียบ นิ่งเงียบ

To stop talking because you don't want to speak about a particular subject, or feel uncomfortable speaking.

หมายถึงการหยุดพูดเพราะว่าเราไม่ต้องการจะพูดเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนั้นๆ หรือรู้สึกอึดอัดที่จะพูด

(e.g. "My students are always very shy when I speak English to them infront of their parents; they clam up and refuse to speak".)

To laugh your head off: หัวเราะ ขำก๊าก ขบขัน

To find something very funny and laugh a lot.

(e.g. "I saw a really good comedy yesterday; I laughed my head off".)

To give it everything: ทุ่มเทเต็มที่

To try very hard to do something. พยายามทำสิ่งนั้นอย่างเต็มกำลัง

(e.g. "I gave it everything in the race, but unfortunately it wasn't good enough!".)

There are a number of different ways in which we can ask for permission to do something.

Featured below are some of the ways in which you can do this:

- May I + verb 1

'May I borrow your pencil?'

'Is it ok if I take a break?'

Do you mind + verb 1

'Do you mind if I answer my phone?'

Would it be possible for me to + verb 1 (formal & very polite)

สวัสดีครับทุกๆคน Insight Bite Size สัปดาห์นี้ ผมอยากขอเปิดตัวสาขาที่ 2 ของเราครับ! อินไซท์ อิงลิชสาขา 2 นี้เปิดตัวที่เมืองชะอำตั้งแต่วันที่ 3 สิงหาคมที่ผ่านมาครับ ได้รับการตอบรับเป็นอย่างดีจากทั้งพ่อแม่ผู้ปกครองที่สนใจให้น้องๆมาเรียนภาษาอังกฤษเพิ่มเติม และผู้สนใจทั่วไปที่อยากพัฒนาทักษะการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อใช้ในการทำงาน

MULTI VERB

To bottle something up:เก็บความรู้สึก

- To keep your feelings (usually sadness, or anger) inside and not tell anyone how you feel.

หมายถึงการเก็บความรู้สึกเศร้า หรือ โกรธ ไว้ข้างใน และไม่บอกความรู้สึกของเราให้ใครรับรู้

"I always think you should tell people how you feel because if you bottle things up it just makes you feel worse".

เช่น ฉันคิดเสมอว่าเธอควรจะบอกคนอื่นบ้างว่าเธอรู้สึกยังไง เพราะถ้าหากเธอเอาแต่เก็บความรู้สึกเอาไว้ข้างใน มันยิ่งจะทำให้เธอรู้สึกแย่กว่าเดิม

To choke up: เศร้ามาก โกรธมาก

-To become so sad that you are unable to talk because you might cry. เศร้าจนไม่สามารถที่จะพูดได้เพราะคุณอาจจะร้องไห้ออกมา

"I watched a really sad documentary about orphans last night. I choked up because it was so sad".

ฉันดูรายการสารคดีเกี่ยวกับเด็กกำพร้าเมื่อคืนนี้ เป็นสารคดีที่น่าเศร้ามาก ฉันเกือบจะร้องไห้ออกมาเพราะว่ามันเป็นเรื่องที่น่าสงสารจริงๆ

I've got a lot on my plate: ยุ่งมาก มีอะไรให้ทำเยอะมาก

- I'm very busy, and I have a lot of things to do.

To shake on something: การยืนยันข้อตกลง

- To confirm an agreement (often used in Business situations). การยืนยันข้อตกลง ( มักใช้บ่อยๆ ในเชิงธุรกิจ)

"I haven't signed the contract yet, but the CEO and I shook on the deal last night".

ฉันยังไม่ได้ลงชื่อในสัญญา แต่ว่าทั้ง CEO และฉันต่างก็ยืนยันในข้อตกลงกันแล้วเมื่อคืนนี้

ADJECTIVES:

Ironic: แดกดัน ถากถาง เยอะเย้ย

Over-protective: ปกป้องมากเกินไป

VERB:

Examine: ไต่สวน สอบสวน พิจารณา

Suggest: เสนอ แนะนำ ชักชวน

NOUN:

Contract: สัญญา

Orphan: เด็กกำพร้า ลูกกำพร้า

Hello and welcome to this week's issue of Bite Size. We hope you had a nice July and managed to stay out dry as we are now officially in the rainy season! In the last edition of Bite Size we asked you the following question.

Which two cities are not in England?

a) Birmingham

b) Glasgow

c) Wigan

d) Leeds

e) York

f) Cardiff

The two cities which are not found in England are Glasgow and Cardiff. Glasgow is in Scotland whilst Cardiff is in Wales.

สวัสดีครับทุกๆ คน หายหน้าไปนานเลยทีเดียวกับ Insight Bite Size ของเรา ผมหวังว่าทุกคนคงมีช่วงเวลาดีๆ ในที่ผ่านมานะครับ ช่วงนี้อากาศเปลี่ยนแปลงบ่อย อีกทั้งยังมีการติดเชื้อไข้หวัด 2009 ที่กำลังระบาดค่อนข้างมากในช่วงนี้ ไปข้างนอกอย่าลืมพกร่มกันแดดกันฝน และที่ดูเหมือนจะเป็นแฟชั่นในตอนนี้ก็คือผ้าปิดปากปิดจมูกครับ รักษาสุขภาพกันให้มากๆนะครับ

ในช่วงนี้ เรื่องที่ผมจะไม่พูดถึงไม่ได้เลยนั้นก็คือ เรื่องเจ้าหมีแพนด้าน้อยที่เพิ่งเกิดมา ซึ่งก็กำลังน่ารักมากๆเลยทีเดียว ผมขอแสดงความยินดีกับคนไทยทุกคนด้วยนะครับ ที่ได้เป็นเจ้าของแพนด้าน้อยที่น่ารักร่วมกัน

และเมื่อสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาเรามีคำถามให้ส่งคำตอบชิงรางวัล กับคำถามที่ว่า

To stand out - โดดเด่น

To be easily noticeable because you are different to everyone else

- เป็นจุดสังเกตเห็นเด่นชัดเพราะคุณแตกต่างจากคนอื่นๆ

"John really stands out in the English class because he speaks much better than anyone else in the group".

- เช่น จอห์นดูโดดเด่นในชั้นเรียนภาษาอังกฤษจริงๆ เพราะเขาสามารถพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ดีกว่าทุกคนในห้องมาก

To squeeze in - ยัด

To try and get something, or yourself into a place where there is very little space :

- การพยายามดันหรือยัดสิ่งของหรือตัวของเราลงในที่ที่คับแคบมากๆ

"There were five of us sharing a taxi, so I had to squeeze into the back seat".

To come out of your shell: กล้าแสดงออกมากขึ้น, มั่นใจมากขึ้น

(e.g. Susan is often very shy, but she comes out of her shell once she gets to know a person better)

To weigh things up: ชั่งใจ

To think about the different options you have before making a decision.

(e.g. I've been accepted by three Universities, but I'm still weighing up which one I want to go to.)

Opposites using un, and im:

การใช้ un และ im ในความหมายตรงกันข้าม

Grammar

ADJECTIVE - คำคุณศัพท์

(a word that describes something)

- เป็นคำที่ใช้อธิบายลักษณะของสิ่งนั้นๆ

Whenever we want to use an adjective we always use it with the verb to be:

- เมื่อไรก็ตามที่เราต้องการใช้คำ adj. เราจะใช้ร่วมกับ verb to be เสมอ

เช่น

He is kind /  The cars are fast

When asking questions we simply switch the position of the subject and verb to be:

- ในประโยคคำถาม เราจะสลับตำแหน่ง ประธานกับ verb to be

เช่น

Is he kind ? / Are the cars fast ?

WARNING !

Never ask a question like this:

Does he kind ? / Do the cars fast ?

The above questions are WRONG because the verb to be has not been used.

To grass someone up: แจ้งความ

- To report someone to the police, or a teacher beacause they have done something wrong.

การบอกหรือแจ้งตำรวจ หรือครูเกี่ยวกับคนที่กระทำความผิด

"The gangster was killed by his gang beacause he had grassed up one of his friends to the police".

เช่น นักเลงคนนั้นถูกแก๊งของเค้าฆ่าตาย เพราะว่าเขาไปแจ้งตำรวจเกี่ยวกับพักพวกในแก๊ง

To show off: ขี้อวด ชอบแสดงว่าตัวเองเก่ง

-To do something you can do well, or say good things about yourself, so other people will be impressed.

การทำในสิ่งที่คุณสามารถทำได้ดี หรือพูดถึงเรื่องดีๆเกี่ยวกับตัวเอง เพื่อให้คนอื่นรู้สึกประทับใจ

"David always shows off to girls. He is always telling them what a popular model he is and flexing his muscles for them".

- This expression is used when someone is in a very difficult situation.

"I'm in a pickle because I just realised my visa expired three weeks ago, I will have to pay a big fine, and I might have to leave the country".

(use these expressions with friends, as people you don't know well may think you are being impolite).

To pack something in - หยุดทำสิ่งที่คุณเคยทำอยู่เป็นประจำ

To stop doing something you used to do regularly

การหยุดทำกิจกรรมบางอย่าง ที่เราเคยทำอยู่เป็นประจำ

"I used to go running a lot, but I packed it in because I have a bad problem with my knee".

ต.ย. ฉันเคยวิ่งออกกำลังกายเป็นประจำ แต่ว่าตอนนี้ฉันหยุดวิ่งแล้ว เพราะว่าหัวเข่าของฉันมีปัญหา

To stay in - การพักผ่อนอยู่บ้านเฉยๆ

To stay at home and not go out anywhere:

To be sad or feel sorry for yourself.

(e.g. John is down in the dumps at the moment; he's lost his job and his wife has left him)

To fight the urge to do something: หักห้ามใจ

In last weeks issue of Bite-size we asked you to correct a passage of English. In the passage there were a number of mistakes  related to the future tense, verb to be, present continuous,  singular and plural  nouns, and frequency adverbs. There were nine errors in total.

The original passage is written in dark blue, while the correct version is written in green and the corrections highlighted in red.

When I'm older I going to study medicine and become a doctors. At the moment I am study at high school, and my favourite subjects is Science, Maths and History. I doesn't like English because it very difficult and my teacher  often is very strict. My Father says I should to study hard if I want to be a doctor because it not an easy job.

MULTI VERB

To chip in: ให้ความช่วยเหลือเพียงเล็กน้อย

- To make a small contribution towards something, or to help someone complete something.

- ให้ความช่วยเหลือเล็กๆน้อยๆ ในการทำบางอย่าง หรือให้ความช่วยเหลือในการทำบางสิ่งจนสำเร็จ

"David did most of the housework, but I chipped in with the ironing and washing up".

To get something off your chest: ยกภูเขาออกจากอก

- This expression is used to describe the act of telling someone something that you have been worried, or annoyed about for a long time.

-สำนวนนี้ใช้ในการอธิบายถึงความรู้สึกเมื่อเราได้บอกผู้อื่นถึงเรื่องที่เรากำลังเป็นกังวลมาก หรือบอกเรื่องที่รบกวนจิตใจเรามาเป็นเวลานาน

"I told my girlfriend I didn't want to see her anymore yesterday. She was very upset, but to be honest I feel better now I've got it off my chest. I'd been worrying about telling her for a long time ".

To stick it out - ติดแหง็ก ต้องทนทำต่อไป

To keep doing something, or stay somewhere even though you are not enjoying yourself: หมายถึงการทำสิ่งนั้นๆหรือการต้องอยู่ที่ที่นั้นต่อไป แม้ว่าคุณจะไม่อยากทำหรือไม่อยากอยู่อีกต่อไปแล้ว

"I don't like working in this country, but I'm going to stick it out for a few more months as I won't get my bonus if I leave now".

ต.ย. ฉันไม่ชอบทำงานในประเทศนี้เลย แต่ฉันต้องทนอยู่ต่ออีกสองสามเดือน ฉันจะไม่ได้โบนัสถ้าฉันลาออกตอนนี้

To crease up -อดหัวเราะไม่ได้ หยุดหัวเราะไม่ได้

To suddenly start laughing a lot:

"I went to a fancy dress party last night, and I creased up when I saw my friend dressed up in women's clothes".

To play it by ear: ยังไม่มีแพลนอะไร ดูตามสถานการณ์

To not plan something, and just see what happens. For example, you arrange to meet some friends, but have no plans. After meeting them, you all decide to go and watch a movie, then go for dinner afterwards. หมายถึงการที่ยังไม่ได้วางแผนอะไรไว้ก่อน แต่จะคอยดูตามสถานการณ์แล้วค่อยตัดสินใจ ตัวอย่างเช่น คุณจะออกไปพบปะกับเพื่อนๆแต่ก็ยังไม่ได้วางแผนว่าจะทำอะไรดี หลังจากที่ทุกคนมาพร้อมกันแล้ว ทุกคนก็ตกลงกันว่าจะไปดูหนังกัน จากนั้นค่อยไปกินข้าวกัน

(e.g. I really don't want to meet James for lunch, because I have too much work to do, but I go anyway. I have to grin and bare it.)

Prepositions

In the English language we often put prepositions before certain words. This can sometimes be confusing for foreign speakers of English. Featured below are some of the typical ways in which we use prepositions.

We can now reveal that Australians refer to the English as Poms. The French call the English 'Roast Beef' (because the English like to eat it so much!) and if you come from London you are a 'Cockney'. People from the English city of Newcastle are called Geordies.

To look like a dog's dinner: ดูไม่จืด ขาดๆเกินๆ

The following passage contains a number of mistakes regarding the past tense, verb to be, adjectives and singular and plural nouns. There are nine errors in total. Try and find as many as you can, and then check your corrections in the next issue of Bite Size.

To mess up - To make a big mistake or be responsible for doing something stupid: การทำเรื่องที่ผิดพลาดครั้งใหญ่ ทำให้เรื่องยุ่งเหยิง

"I really messed up last week, I missed my plane to England and had to pay extra to be put on another ".

ต.ย. เมื่ออาทิตย์ที่แล้วฉันทำเรื่องผิดพลาดใหญ่หลวงจริงๆ ฉันตกเครื่องที่จะไปอังกฤษ แถมยังต้องจ่ายเงินเพิ่มสำหรับเที่ยวบินใหม่อีกด้วย

To be caught red handed: จับได้คาหนังคาเขา

To be found or seen doing something wrong, or illegal by someone else.( ถูกคนอื่นจับได้ว่ากำลังทำสิ่งผิดหรือสิ่งผิดกฏหมาย)

(e.g. "The manager caught his employee red handed; stealing money from the cash till".)

To break out: หนีออกจาก

- To escape from somewhere

การหนีออกจากสถานที่ใดสถานที่หนึ่ง

"The prisoner broke out from prison, but was later caught by the police".

เช่น มีนักโทษแหกคุกออกมา แต่ว่าในที่สุดเขาก็ถูกตำรวจจับได้

To break up: ห้ามปราม / แบ่งออกเป็นชิ้นๆ

-To stop people fighting with each other, or to divide something breakable into smaller pieces.

หมายถึง การเข้าไปห้ามคนที่กำลังทะเลาะกันหรือกำลังสู้กัน หรือหมายถึงการแบ่งของ(ที่หักได้) ให้เป็นชิ้นเล็กๆ

"Two men started fighting with each other on the street, so I broke the fight up."

To clear up: การจัดสิ่งของให้เป็นระเบียบ

To make things tidy, or pick things up and put them away.

การจัดสิ่งของให้เป็นระเบียบ หรือเก็บสิ่งของทิ้ง

(e.g. "My husband and I have an agreement: I do the cooking and he clears

To splash out: ทุ่มทุนสร้าง ทุ่มเงินซื้อ

To spend a lot of money on something.

การจ่ายเงินจำนวนมาก เพื่อซื้อของบางอย่าง

(e.g. "I got a new job, so I decided to splash out on a new car".)

To be born with a silver spoon in your mouth: คาบช้อนเงิน ช้อนทองมาเกิด

This phrase is used when we want to describe someone who comes from a family which has a lot of money. We use it in a negative way because we think the person has an easy life and does not have to work hard

To be out of someone's league: เอื้อมไม่ถึง ไม่ชายตามอง ไม่แล

If someone is out of your league it means they will not fancy you because they have a lot more money, or because they are a lot better looking than you.

เราใช้สำนวนนี้เมื่อกล่าวถึง คนที่จะไม่มีวันหลงชอบคุณ เพราะว่าคนคนนั้นร่ำรวยมากกว่า หรือดูดีกว่าคุณมากๆ

(e.g. "I love David Beckham, but he would never fancy me. He is extremely rich and only likes Supermodels. He's out of my league" !)
